Named Tripod by rescuers, the Labrador-type pup was saved from certain death, having already been badly injured by dog catchers who were getting him ready for slaughter.

Tripod’s leg had been ripped apart, wounds which are now being treated by vets provided by NoToDogMeat, which supports projects in Phnom Penh.

NoToDogMeat rescuer Tet Lin, who runs the animal shelter which is caring for the injured dog, said: “Locals stood by and watched him suffer since no one was ready to take on the responsibilities of assisting an injured dog.

“That was until I arrived and quickly brought Tripod to the vet clinic. At the vet clinic, Tripod received immediate medical attention, and his leg was treated. The veterinarian determined that he would need surgery to fully recover. He required antibiotics, x-rays, and fluids.”

So that Tripod could recover away from the hustle and bustle of other rescued dogs, Tet Lin decided to take him home, so that the two year-old canine could recuperate in peace.

He added: “He truly deserves a second chance at life after escaping a horrible death. I brought Tripod home for future treatment because I did not want him to stay at the vet facility for an extended amount of time. To clean his wound, I purchased bandages, alcohol, antiseptic cream, honey, and saline solution.

“Every morning, I clean his wound and change his bandage, as recommended by the vet. He is improving, but only slowly. Tripod’s wound won’t heal completely for several months, but I’ll make sure it does and that Tripod gets better.”

Under Tet and NoToDogMeat’s care Tripod is now on the way to making a full recovery, after which he will be looking for a new start, potentially in the UK.

The NoToDogMeat charity recently restarted its overseas rehoming scheme, and pups Debbie and Delphi arrived in Europe from China, the first to travel since the pandemic.

Tet added: “Wherever Tripod goes, we will make sure that his home is loving, peaceful and free from danger. He needs the chance to enjoy life, as he is such a young dog and has such a scary start.

“For now we will continue to provide him with proper care and regular check-ups to maintain his overall well-being.”

The NoToDogMeat charity started in 2009, after London lawyer Julia de Cadenet saw for herself the horrors of the dog and cat meat trade.

Now supporting shelters and schemes in China, Cambodia and the Philippines, the charity holds United Nations Special Consultative status.

Julia said: “Tripod is a very lucky boy, and thanks to Tet is on the road to a happy and healthy future. His story is not unique though, and that is why the fight continues to ensure that all dogs get the respect that they deserve.

“Tet’s project not only rescues animals, but helps to educate communities about dogs and cats, changing hearts and minds on animal welfare. What a brilliant job they are doing.”
